Main Cast: Stanley Tucci, Kiernan Shipka
Director: John R. Leonetti
The Silence is an unapologetic rip-off of the A Quiet Place franchise. But it is a tight, streamlined rip-off that tells the whole story in an easily digestible 90 minutes, and for that it has my admiration.
We begin with the origin of the monsters that are about to plague Earth. We move swiftly on to our main family and their attempt to survive the onslaught of flying man-eaters and the havoc they wreak on society.
Stanley Tucci is the dad, and he’s excellent because he’s Stanley Tucci. Miranda Otto is the mom, and same. Kiernan Shipka is the deaf teenage daughter (I told you it was a rip-off) and she does a pretty good job with a pretty thankless role.
Why did I enjoy The Silence? It’s moderately scary (there is considerable gore), the family dynamic is solid because of Otto and Tucci, and it gets the job done in one movie. We’re not left to wonder what the creatures look like, where they came from, if there are other people alive, or what happens to the main characters.
It’s a thriller with a beginning, a middle, and an end, something that is in sadly short supply in this genre. The Silence is not going to change your life, but it is entertaining for the entire runtime. If you like any of the three main actors, give it try.
The Silence is currently streaming on Netflix.
