I don’t always appreciate my HDTV. To be honest, I had a hard time getting used to it – particularly messing with the aspect ratio. Regular TV didn’t really look any different and sometimes it just seemed like more of a hassle than anything else.
Yes, there were days I longed for my old 4:3 aspect CRT. And yes, I’m cheap enough and generally cared little enough that I would have kept that TV forever if it hadn’t rudely croaked.
But then I saw Defiance and I remembered all the things I love about technology. That wide, crisp, gorgeous picture reminded me how movies are supposed to look – and can look even on a small screen. I don’t get to the theater as often as I would like – having a TV that gives me such a gorgeous picture for a theatrical release is heaven for a movie nerd like me.
I may not be the biggest fan of every new gadget to come on the market – this old dog doesn’t always take well to new tricks. But High Definition TV pictures are worth the cost, the learning curve and the general discomfort with anything invented after 1985.
So bring me my epic scale movies, Netflix, so I can revel in my own limited high tech world and clap my hands at the pretty pictures. Or battle scenes! Those are even better. Sometimes even I have to admit that change is gooooooooood.
