The back lot at Universal Studios in Los Angeles was struck by a massive fire yesterday, ruining numerous sets, including the courthouse square from Back to the Future and a New York street used in Dragnet and Bruce Almighty. Thousands of archival copies of the studio’s movie and TV shows were also destroyed, though Ron Meyer, president of NBC Universal, said the studio had duplicates of everything, and several hundred titles were recovered by firefighters.
It took more than 12 hours to put out the fire, a situation possibly made worse by low water pressure and an overworked sprinkler system. Authorities are investigating whether that was the case, as well as the cause of the fire.
