Two recent passings of note in the TV community:
On January 8, animator Iwao Takamoto, best known as the creator of Scooby-Doo, died after a massive coronary at age 81. Takamoto, who got his start as a Disney Studios apprentice before joining Hanna-Barbera, created the Great Dane, Shaggy and their buddies in the late ’60s, and also was responsible for Astro, the Jetsons’ family dog, among other characters. Takamoto passed away three weeks after Joseph Barbera, the co-founder of Hanna-Barbera.
Also on January 8, actress Yvonne De Carlo died of natural causes at age 84. De Carlo had many roles during her stage and screen career, playing opposite Charlton Heston in Cecil B. DeMille’s “The Ten Commandments”. But she was probably most most famous for playing Lily Munster on “The Munsters”.
