Born on August 15, 1972, Ben Affleck began life with the unwieldy moniker Benjamin Géza Affleck-Boldt. He began acting at age twelve in television and commercials, with his first real speaking role on the big screen coming in 1992’s
School Ties. He does have one attributed role as a nine-year-old in 1981’s The Dark End of the Street but details there are hazy at best. He proceeded to make a mark in independent films courtesy of his continuing collaboration with director Kevin Smith. Affleck leapt into the spotlight and into Hollywood’s elite with his Academy Award win (with Matt Damon) for penning Good Will Hunting in 1997.
Affleck quickly became tabloid fodder with high profile romances with Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lopez. The latter became such a media monster that the duo was dubbed “Bennifer”, a name Affleck reportedly despised. Their engagement was an event, the dissolution of same became even bigger and by the time the disastrous Gigli starring the pair debuted, they had parted ways and the kerfuffle finally began to die down. Not without casualties, however. Affleck’s career floundered and he found himself with a string of bad films and a lot of bad press and a stint in alcohol rehab.
Not all his press has been of the tabloid variety or for that matter bad. Affleck is openly politically active, campaigning in 2000 for Al Gore, in 2004 for John Kerry and Barrack Obama in 2008. He has made it no secret that he considers a run for public office at some point in the future.
Affleck’s acting, producing and directing career since surmounting the tumultuous early part of the millennium has been varied in both content and success. He married actress Jennifer Garner in 2005 and the couple has two daughters.
