Seeing the Statue Seekers
It’s that time of year again! I have to admit that I haven’t paid a whole lot of attention to the Oscar buzz this year – I think I’m just getting tired of awards shows. Nonetheless, the Academy Awards always provide me with an excellent list of movies to add to my Netflix queue. This year is no exception. Here is a handy list of the Netflix status of this year’s major contenders. None are available yet on Instant Streaming, but I’ll let you know when they are.
12 Years a Slave (drama based on a true story of a free man in the 1800’s captured and held as a slave) – Win for Best Picture and Nominated for Director ( Steve McQueen), Best Actor (Chiwetel Ejiofor), Best Supporting Actor (Michael Fassbender) and Win for Best Supporting Actress (Lupito Nyong’o) – Coming to DVD and Blu-Ray April 1st.
American Hustle (the story of a Congressional corruption expose in the 1980s) – Nominated for Best Picture and Director (David O. Russell), Best Actor (Christian Bale) and Actress (Amy Adams), Best Supporting Actor (Bradley Cooper) and Actress (Jennifer Lawrence) – Available now on DVD and Blu-Ray
Captain Phillips (the story of a cargo ship attacked by Somali pirates) – Nominated for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Barkhad Abdi) – Available now on DVD and Blu-Ray
Dallas Buyers Club (story of man diagnosed with AIDS in the 1980s smuggling treatments from abroad) – Nominated for Best Picture, Win for Best Actor (Matthew McConaughey), Win for Best Supporting Actor (Jared Leto) – Available now on DVD and Blu-Ray
Gravity (story of 2 astronauts lost in space) – Nominated for Best Picture and Win for Director (Alphonso Cuaran), Best Actress (Sandra Bullock) – Available on DVD and Blu-Ray on March 25th
Her (man falls in love with computer operating system) – Nominated for Best Picture – All release dates unknown
Nebraska (story of a grumpy old man traveling cross country to claim an imaginary prize) – Nominated for Best Picture and Director (Alexander Payne), Best Actor (Bruce Dern) and Supporting Actress (June Squibb) – Available now on DVD and Blu-Ray
Philomena (unlikely pair of journalist and aging Irishwoman team to try and find her son) – Nominated for Best Picture and Best Actress (Judi Dench) – Available now on DVD and Blu-Ray
The Wolf of Wall Street (crooked stockbroker drama) – Nominated for Best Picture and 
Director (Martin Scorsese), Best Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio), Best Supporting Actor (Jonah Hill) – Available on DVD and Blu-Ray on March 25th
August: Osage County (adult sisters return home to search for missing father) – Nominated for Best Actress (Meryl Streep), Best Supporting Actress (Julia Roberts) – Available now on DVD and Blu-Ray
Blue Jasmine (Woody Allen directed story of a bored housewife) – Win for Best Actress (Cate Blanchett) – Available now on DVD and Blu-Ray
And there you have it. As tonight’s ceremony draws near I have seen only one of this year’s Oscar movies. Which is sad. But I’ll get to them eventually – and so can you. I’ll update this as more things become available. Maybe some of them will even stream at some point. Don’t count on that, but stranger things have happened!
