Biography
Born in 1968, Australian actor Eric Bana began his acting career as a comedian. In the early 1990s he began performing on Australian television in a number of comic role, many relying on his skill with impressions. His big screen debut came in the form of the Australian film The Castle. The movie was a surprise success in Australia with Bana in yet another comic role.
In 2000, Bana got to try on a dramatic role for the first time in the Australian film Chopper. Playing the lead, he was recognized by both fans and critics for his portrayal of an infamous Australian criminal. Hollywood soon beckoned and Bana saw his star rise with roles in Black Hawk Down, The Incredible Hulk and Troy. Though not all his films were financial or critical successes, his name was becoming widely known.
Bana exploded onto the international scene in 2005 playing the lead role in Steven Spielberg’s Munich. Co-starring with Daniel Craig and Geoffery Rush, Bana shouldered the bulk of the intense, controversial film about retribution following the murder of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Summer Olympic Games. In the years since his career has been marked by a series of moderately successful films, a mix or drama, comedy and action. He has a role in the 2011 action drama Hanna and has been hailed by author Vince Flynn as the actor who most resembles his Mitch Rapp character, a role that has yet to be cast for an upcoming film debut.
Bana is active in charities advocating for homeless young people, mental illness awareness, endangered wildlife and a number of other causes. He married wife Rebecca Gleeson in 1997. The couple lives in Australia with their two children.
