Coming in April

Silicon Valley – Season 3 (TV comedy, Thomas Middleditch, T.J. Miller) – This HBO series is about a start-up that is funded by a wealthy eccentric. I’m realy starting to think I need to get HBO. DVD Only

The Affair – Season 3 (TV drama, Dominic West, Ruth Wilson) – Three seasons of infidelity. This one is not a streamer, so DVD Only

April 6th

The BFG (family, Mark Rylance, Ruby Barnhill) – I know, we’ve been fooled before. But Netflix says this will be Instant Streaming Available on the 6th.

DCI Banks – Season 5 (TV drama, Stephen Tompkinson, Andrea Lowe) – British murder mystery crime drama series. This is the final season. DVD Only

Chewing Gum – Season 2 (TV comedy, Michaela Coel, Robert Lonsdale) – 20-something tries to no longer be a virgin.  Instant Streaming Only, no news about a possible 3rd season

Moana (family animation, Auli’i Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson) – Disney’s newest princess.  DVD Only

The Book of Love (drama, Jason Sudeikis, Maisie Williams) – Grieving widower helps troubled teen.  Maisie Williams rocks – I will absolutely see this.  DVD Only

Running Wild (western, Sharon Stone, Tommy Flanagan) – Widow rancher and convicts work with a group of wild horses to try and save ranch.  DVD Only

Don’t Hang Up (horror, Gregg Sulkin, Garrett Clayton) – Prank calls can backfire, obnoxious teenagers.  DVD Only

Lavender (thriller, Abbie Cornish, Diego Klattenhoff) – Post-accident amnesia patient recovering troubling past.  DVD Only

Blue Gold (documentary) – The history of blue jeans – with a vintage jeans guru.  Who knew there was such a thing?  This looks kind of fun.  DVD Only

Youth in Oregon (drama, Frank Langella, Billy Crudup) – Cruddup driving cranky father Langella to Oregon to be euthanized.  Oh, yes, I’ll be seeing this.  DVD Only

Wynonna Earp – Season 1 (TV western, Melanie Scrofano, Tim Rozon) – SyFY channel original based on a comic book about the grand daughter of Wyatt Earp.  There is a season 2 coming.  Instant Streaming Only

A Weekend With the Family (comedy, Marques Houston, Karrueche Tran) – Dating your boss’s daughter?  Not always a good idea.  Instant Streaming Only

The Tenth Man (foreign comedy, Alan Sabbagh, Julieta Zylberberg) – This Hebrew language fish out of water comedy has been out on DVD since early February – now it’s Available on Instant Streaming.

March 31st

13 Reasons Why – Season 1 (TV drama, Katherine Langford, Dylan Minnette) – A teen who committed suicide leaves behind clues to her reasons in a series of messages to classmates.  This looks creepy and scary and maybe like something I should watch.  Instant Streaming Only

Bordertown – Season 1 (animated comedy, Hank Azaria, Nicholas Gonzalez) – Family Guy makers take on a border patrol agent and his wacky immigrant neighbor.  Instant Streaming Only

Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life – Season 1 (comedy, Jack Cutmore-Scott, Meaghan Rath) – Life after college isn’t always a bed of roses.  Or even a single rose, as Cooper Barrett will attest. Instant Streaming Only

Five Came Back – Season 1 (documentary, Steven Spielberg, Guillermo del Toro) – Thie looks more like a mini-series.  It’s current Hollywood directors talking about WWII era filmmakers who enlisted to document the war.  Instant Streaming Only

Rosewood – Season 1 (TV crime drama, Morris Chestnut, Jaina Lee Ortiz) – Genius pathologist who does independent autopsies (!) and solves crimes.  There is a second season.  Instant Streaming Only

The Carmichael Show – Season 1 and 2 (TV comedy, Jerrod Carmichael, Loretta Devine) – A couple tries to live their life with his crazy family intruding.  There is a third season.  Instant Streaming Only

The Discovery (drama, Jason Segel, Rooney Mara) – Great cast for this Netflix original movie, including Jesse Plemons and Robert Redford.  A scientist discovers proof of an afterlife, and a whole bunch of suicides is the result  I will absolutely watch this.  Instant Streaming Only

Firstborn (??) – No idea what this is.  I guess I’ll find out when it shows up.  Instant Streaming Only

March 30th

Life in Pieces – Season 1 (TV comedy, Thomas Sadoski, Dianne Wiest) – This family comedy aired in 2014-2015 on network TV and is just making its way here. There is a second season, but I don’t know when it will release. Instant Streaming Only

March 29th

I Am Michael (drama, James Franco, Zachary Quinto) – Bio-drama about a gay activist who renounces homosexuality after a health crisis. DVD Only

Evolution (foreign horror, Max Brebant, Roxane Duran) – French language creeper about missing people and weird medical experiments. Instant Streaming Available

The C Word (documentary, Morgan Freeman) – A filmmaker looks at cancer treatment, traditional and lifestyle, from a firsthand perspective. Instant Streaming Only

March 28th

Archer – Season 7 (adult animation, H. Jon Benjamin Aisha Tyler) – The animated spy spoof is back for another season. This one is a streamer, I’ll keep an eye on it. For now this season is listed as DVD Only. It looks like the show is going to continue through season 10.

Doctor Strange (action, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor) – Marvel strikes again with the origin story of Dr. Strange.  It’s pretty good, especially for those who love all thing Cumberbatch.  DVD Only

Rules Don’t Apply (drama, Warren Beatty, Lily Collins) – If you work for Howard Hughes, you better not be fraternizing, young people.  DVD Only

Shut In (thriller, Naomi Watts, Oliver Platt) – Mom and son stuck in a blizzard with bad guys.  Yeah, I’ll see this.  DVD Only

Patriots Day (drama, Mark Wahlberg, Kevin Bacon) – Hunting down the Boston Marathon bombers. DVD Only

Silence (drama, Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver) – Priests are not welcomed with open arms by 17th century Japan.  DVD Only

20th Century Women (comedy, Annette Bening, Elle Fanning) – 1970s period piece about women and a male border raising a male child.  Also with Billy Cruddup, which makes it worth seeing for me.  DVD Only

A Tale of Love and Darkness (foreign drama, Natalie Portman, Gilad Kahana) – Hebrew language post WWII period piece about the life of author Amos Oz.  DVD Only

Arsenal (thriller, Adrian Grenier, John Cusack) – Guy tries to save brother from mobster kidnapper.  DVD Only

Bodyslam: Revenge of the Banana (documentary, Morgan Spurlock) – Spoof wrestlers try to fend off the government and keep performing.  DVD Only

For Grace (documentary) – A restaurant being built from the ground up and the toll it takes on its famous chef.  Instant Streaming Available

The Most Hated Woman in America (drama, Melissa Leo, Josh Lucas) – A look at the life of atheist Madalyn Murray O’Hair.  Instant Streaming Only

Sophie and the Rising Sun (drama, Julianne Nicholson, Margo Martindale) – 1940s period piece set in North Carolina, where a Japanese-American man is new to a small town, creating tension. DVD Only

The Brokenwood Mysteries – Season 3 (TV drama, Neill Rea, Fern Sutherland) – A New Zealand detective series.  It has been renewed for a 4th season.  DVD Only.

Nocturnal Animals (thriller, Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal) – Ex-husband’s new book brings on the creepies. I’ll definitely see this. DVD Only

Fire at Sea (foreign documentary, Samuele Puccilo, Mattias Cucina) – Italian language doc about the island of Lampedusa, a focus of immigration struggles between African and Europe. Instant Streaming Available

In Dubious Battle (drama, James Franco, Nat Wolff) – Franco directed this adaptation of the John Steinbeck novel.  Terrific cast, including  Ed Harris, Josh Hutcherson, Sam Shepard, Zach Braff, Robert Duvall, Bryan Cranston.  Holy star power.  DVD Only

10 Days in a Madhouse: The Nellie Bly Story (thriller, Caroline Barry, Christopher Lambert) – Reporter gets herself admitted to an asylum to document abuse.  DVD Only

Julieta (foreign drama, Emma Suárez, Adriana Ugarte) – Castilian Spanish language film directed by Pedro Almodóvar about a middle aged teacher looking back at her adult life.  DVD Only

Tower (animated documentary) – Animated look at the 1966 clock tower shooting in Texas.  DVD Only

A Kind of Murder (thriller, Patrick Wilson, Jessica Biel) – Just because you wanted to kill her doesn’t mean you did.  Does it?  DVD Only

Samurai Gourmet – Season 1 (comedy,  Honami Suzuki, Naoto Takenaka) – I think this is more of a mini-series.  A Japanese language story based on a manga about a man who, once retired, searches for the most delectable food and drink.  Instant Streaming Only, no indication of a second season.

Deidra & Laney Rob a Train (comedy, Missi Pyle, Danielle Nicolet) – Teenage girls rob a few trains to make ends meet while their mothers are in jail.  Instant Streaming Only

Pandora (foreign thriller, Jin-yeong Jeong, Kim Joo-Hyun) – Korean language story of a man trying to save his town from a nuclear power plant after an earthquake.  Instant Streaming Only

Fences (drama, Denzel Washington, Viola Davis) – Viola Davis captured the Best Supporting Actress nomination for this period piece set in 1950s.  The film about a man denied the opportunity to play baseball because of his race was also nominated for Best Picture.  Adapted from the play.  DVD Only

Passengers (sci-fi, Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt) – Someone described this to me as “attractive people in space” and that’s about right.  It’s sci-fi, but really it’s a romance with just a bit of action.  DVD Only

Solace (thriller, Anthony Hopkins, Colin Farrell) – Psychic doc hunts for serial killer.  Top of the queue.  DVD Only.

Elle (foreign thriller, Isabelle Huppert, Laurent Lafitte) – French language thriller about a rape victim confronting her assailant.  DVD Only

Priceless (romance, Joel Smallbone, Bianca A. Santos) – Unwitting human trafficker helps his would-be victims.  Creepy that it’s a romance.  DVD Only

The Edge of Seventeen (comedy, Hailee Steinfeld, Woody Harrelson) – Good cast, including Kyra Sedgwick, for this coming of age comedy about high school frenemies.  DVD Only

Bleed for This (drama, Miles Teller, Aaron Eckhart) – Boxer Vinny Pazienza biopic.  DVD Only

The Love Witch (horror, Samantha Robinson, Gian Keys) – Campy horror about a witch looking for love.  DVD Only

Being 17 (foreign drama,  Sandrine Kiberlain, Kacey Mottet Klein) – French language about high school enemies forced to share a household.  DVD Only

Stray Bullets (thriller, Asa Spurlock, Jack Fessenden) – It’s hard to clean out an old trailer when there are fugitives hiding there.  DVD Only

48 Hours to Live (thriller, James Maslow, Caitlin McHugh) – Undercover in the underworld of dance.  I had no idea there was an underworld of dance.  DVD Only

Pete’s Dragon (family, Bryce Dallas Howard, Oakes Fegley) – Another live action Disney cartoon remake. I can’t decide if this is using technology for good or evil. Instant Streaming Available

Jim Norton: Mouthful of Shame (comedy special) – Nope, don’t know who you are, Jim Norton.  But I like the name of your comedy special.  Instant Streaming Only

Eloise (thriller, Chace Crawford, Eliza Dushku) – When has anything ever come from a visit to an abandoned asylum? Never, that’s right. DVD Only

Landfill Harmonic (foreign documentary) – Spanish language doc about a group of kids in Paraguay who make it big playing instruments made out of trash from a landfill. DVD Only

The Greasy Strangler (comedy, Michael St. Michaels, Sky Elobar) – Strange sounding little movie about a romantic triangle including a father and son, with a serial killer on the loose as a side treat. I’m really tempted. DVD Only.

By Sidney Lumet (documentary) – A look at the director’s work, made a few years before he died. DVD Only

Love – Season 2 (TV comedy, Gillian Jacobs, Paul Rust) – A pair of friends trying to work their way through modern romances.  There is a season 3 coming.  Instant Streaming Only

One More Time – Season 1 (TV fantasy, L, So-He Yoon) – I believe this is a Korean language series. It’s about a Groundhog Day type scenario for a young man who is trying to save his girlfriend from some unfortunate event.  Instant Streaming Only

Man Down (thriller, Shia LaBeouf, Kate Mara) – Dystopian future with Shia as soldier looking for his family.  I don;t think this is going to be for me.  DVD Only

Moonlight (drama, Trevante Rhodes, André Holland) – 1980s period piece about an African American adolescent in Miami struggling with his sexuality.  Oscar winner for Best Picture and Supporting Actor.  DVD Only

Queen of Katwe (drama, David Oyelowo, Lupita Nyong’o) – True story of a young Ugandan female chess prodigy.  DVD Only

The Hangman: Shepherds and Butchers (drama, Andrea Riseborough, Steve Coogan) – This looks amazing.  The story of a prison guard on death row who ends up there as an inmate, and his legal defense team.  I really like Steve Coogan, this goes on the queue.  DVD Only

Masterminds (action comedy, Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson) – Also with Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Jason Sudekis.  I can’t possibly resist these goofballs as wannabe thieves in a based on true events story. DVD Only

Creepy (foreign thriller, Hidetoshi Nishijima, Yuko Takeuchi) – Japanese language thriller about a criminal psychologist and his neighborhood that has become…creepy.  DVD Only

Allied (thriller, Brad Pitt, Marion Cotillard) – The espionage movie that is reported to have broken up Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s marriage.  Not that I would ever celebrity gossip…  DVD Only

Contract to Kill (action, Steven Seagal, Russell Wong) – Is it just me or does Steven Seagal really make a movie a week?  DVD Only

All We Had (drama, Katie Holmes, Stefania Owen) – Directed by Holmes, this is the story of a mother and daughter, homeless and headed east when they break down in a small town.  Apparently based on a book.  DVD Only

Officer Downe (sci-fi, Kim Coates, Tyler Ross) – LA cop who gets killed, gets up, repeats.  DVD Only
