January 24th

Sherlock – Season 4 (TV mystery, Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman) – I adore this modern Sherlock Holmes series. It’s actually hard to see Cumberbatch as anyone else. Or anyone else as Sherlock. This is DVD Only for now, but it is a streamer – I’ll let you know when.

The Code – Season 2 (TV mystery, Dan Spielman, Ashley Zukerman) – Crash in the Australian outback leads to conspiracy revelations. This looks pretty good, I might have to check it out. DVD Only for now, but it’s a streamer. I’ll let you know when it comes out.

Ballers – Season 2 (TV comedy, Dwayne Johnson, Rob Corddry) – I haven’t seen any of this HBO show, but I really do love The Rock. It’s DVD Only, but I think it’s probably worth the rental.

Snowden (drama, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley) – I’m sick of hearing the name Snowden, but my love for JGL is more powerful than my weariness. This goes on the queue. DVD Only

Inferno (thriller, Tom Hanks, Felicity Jones) – Yet another installment in the Robert Langdon series based on books by Dan Brown. A lot of people hate these, I think they’re kind of fun. DVD Only

USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage (action, Nicolas Cage, Tom Sizemore) – WWII period piece about a downed ship and the men trying to survive. DVD Only

The Vessel (drama, Martin Sheen, Lucas Quintana) – Tsunami washes school away with kids in it – survivor seen as miracle. DVD Only

The Monster (horror, Zoe Kazan, Scott Speedman) – If your car breaks down in a creepy, deserted area – be afraid. Very afraid. DVD Only

January 21st

Bates Motel: Season 4 (TV drama, Vera Farmiga, Freddie Highmore) – We gave up on this one after the first season, it just didn’t float our boats.  Out on DVD for quite some time, but now it’s Instant Streaming Available, Downloadable

Terrace House: Aloha State – Season 1, Part 1 (reality TV, Reina Triendl, Ryota Yamasato) – If I HAD to be stuck living with strangers, I guess I would want it to be in Hawaii.  Instant Streaming Only, Downloadable

Cristela Alonzo: Lower Classy (comedy special) – Netflix does love its comedy specials.  Instant Streaming Only, Downloadable

Gad Gone Wild (foreign comedy special) – French language stand up special with Gad Elmaleh.  I guess he’s a big deal in France.  Netflix Original, Instant Streaming Only

Hieronymus Bosch: Touched by the Devil (foreign documentary) – Dutch language examination the methods of the medieval painter.  Instant Streaming Only

Kill Command (action, Vanessa Kirby, Thure Lindhart) – This one just came out recently on DVD, now it’s also Available on Instant Streaming and Downloadable

12 Monkeys – Season 2 (TV sci-fi, Aaron Stanford, Amanda Schull) – SyFy channel time travelers are back. This one is not a streamer – but SyFy series can be tricky with their streaming, so I’ll keep an eye on it. DVD Only

Rizzoli & Isles – Season 7 (TV drama, Angie Harmon, Sasha Alexander) – I believe this is the last seaosn for this pair of detectives. It’s DVD Only

Hillsong: Let Hopes Rise (documentary) – Christian rock band concert tour. We don’t see a lot of concert DVDs on Netflix, so this is a little unusual. DVD Only

The Disappointments Room (thriller, Kate Beckinsale, Mel Raido) – If there’s a locked door in your attic, maybe you should leave it be, no? DVD Only

The Whole Truth (thriller, Keanu Reeves, Renée Zellweger) – Kid kills wealthy father. Lawyer finds out father is a dick. Investigation ensues. DVD Only

Dancer (documentary, Sergei Polunin) – The story of the dancer who did that great video to Hozier’s “Take Me to Church” leaving professional dance. DVD Only

The Hollow Point (thriller, Patrick Wilson, Lynn Collins) – Being sheriff of a town on the Mexican border automatically leads to drug cartel wars, right? DVD Only

Long Way North (family animation, Chloé Dunn, Geoffrey Greenhill) – Girl sets out to find her grandfather. I won’t see it, but you all enjoy! DVD Only

Come and Find Me (thriller, Aaron Paul, Annabelle Wallis) – Lots of thrillers this week. This one has Jesse Pinkman looking for his girlfriend and finding a lot of mystery. I’ll see it. DVD Only

The Handmaiden (foreign thriller, Min-hie Kim, Kim Tae-ri) – Korean language story of a heist complicated by a romance. DVD Only

The Free World (drama, Boyd Holbrook, Elisabeth Moss) – Innocent ex-con has trouble adjusting after his release. DVD Only

Train to Busan (foreign sci-fi, Yoo Gong, Yu-mi Jeong) – Korean language zombies on a train. DVD Only

January 17th

Frontier – Season 1 (TV adventure, Jason Momoa, Landon Liboiron) – 18th century fur trade period series.  I like Jason Momoa (he was awesome as Khal Drogo on Game of Thrones), perhaps it’s worth a binge.  Instant Streaming Only, Downloadable

Fatima (foreign drama, Soria Zeroual, Zita Hanrot) – French/Arabic language tale of an injured immigrant mother journaling her story for her daughters.  Instant Streaming Only

Sing Street (musical, Lucy Boynton, Maria Doyle Kennedy) – Transferring schools made easier by forming a band. Instant Streaming Available

River (thriller, Rossif Sutherland, Douangmany Soliphanh) – An American doctor intervenes in a sexual assault in Laos and finds himself in big trouble. Instant Streaming Available

Kill Zone 2 (action, Tony Jaa, Andy On) – Undercover cop goes junkie to make his bust. That, surprisingly, doesn’t work out for him. Instant Streaming Available

Kung Fu Panda 3 (family animation, Jack Black, Angelina Jolie) – I won’t see it, but if you dig these, here you go! Instant Streaming Available

Back in the Day (sports drama, Michael Madsen, Shannen Doherty) – Also with Alec Baldwin and Danny Glover. 1980s period piece about boxing. Instant Streaming Available

My Golden Days (foreign drama, Clémence Le Gall, Pierre Andrau) – French language story in three parts about a man, his career change and his youth. Instant Streaming Available

My Big Night (foreign comedy, Rafael Martos Sánchez, Mario Casas) – Castilian language story of hijinks and shenanigans at the New Year’s Eve taping of a variety show. Instant Streaming Available

Code of Honor (action, James Russo, Helena Mattsson) – Don’t let the listed stars fool you – this is a Steven Seagal movie. They are ENDLESS. Instant Streaming Available

Mothers and Daughters (drama, Selma Blair, Courteney Cox) – Photographer’s jet setting career shifts focus after she becomes pregnant. Instant Streaming Available

Ixcanul (foreign drama, María Mercedes Coroy, María Telón) – Maya/Spanish language story of a girl from a small village getting to see the modern world. Instant Streaming Only

Halloweed (comedy/horror,  Simon Rex, Shannon Brown) – Stoner serial killer black comedy.  What’s not to love?  Everything?  Maybe.  Instant Streaming Only, Downloadable

Señora Acero – Season 3 (foreign TV drama, Blanca Soto, Litzy) – Spanish language story of a woman who takes over her late husband’s drug trafficking business. No word about a fourth season.  Instant Streaming Only, Downloadable

A Beautiful Now (drama, Abigail Spencer, Cheyenne Jackson) – Friends try to talk suicidal member of their group out of the locked bathroom.  Instant Streaming Only

Hostage to the Devil (documentary,  Ali Lyons, John Zaffis) – Story of Father Malachi Martin, real life exorcist.  And apparently either hostage to the devil or saving hostages to the devil.  Instant Streaming Only, Downloadable

Twisted Trunk, Big Fat Body (drama) – Not much information about this one yet – something with a bomb in a toy  being passed from child to child.  And it has a super weird name.  Instant Streaming Only, Downloadable

A Series of Unfortunate Events – Season 1 (fantasy, Neil Patrick Harris, Joan Cusack) – I’m looking forward to this – what a cast!  I’m told I will love it, but the source is unreliable, since they didn’t finish the books any more than I did.  Netflix Original, Instant Streaming Only, Downloadable

The Investigator: A British Crime Story – Season 1 (documentary,  Mark Williams-Thomas, Sam Gillingham) – Examination of a real life murder case to see if the convicted man is innocent.  This looks like a mini-series – I don’t see any indication of a second season.  Instant Streaming Only, Downloadable

Aquarius – I don’t know if this is the second season of the TV show with David Duchovny or the Brazilian movie with Sonia Braga.  We’ll find out as the date gets closer.  Instant Streaming Available, Downloadable

Casablancas: The Man Who Loved Women (documentary, John Casablancas, Cindy Crawford) – Story of the founder of the Elite modeling agency.  Instant Streaming Only, Downloadable

Historia de un clan (foreign TV drama,  Chino Darín, Alejandro Awada) – Spanish language mini-series based on an Argentinian family of kidnappers and murderers in the 1980s.  Lovely.  Instant Streaming Only, Downloadable

Alice Through the Looking Glass (fantasy,  Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway) – Nobody seems to have loved this, and it’s been out for awhile on DVD.  Maybe now is the time to take a chance on it since it’s Available on Instant Streaming

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (sci-fi, Eva Green, Asa Butterfield) – Another one that I’m looking forward to because I never got around to the book! Tim Burton directs. DVD Only

Bridget Jones’s Baby (comedy, Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth) – I’m divided about this. On one hand it’s been far too long for a successful sequel. On the other hand I liked the original and this one has both Colin firth AND Dr. McDreamy. I just don’t know. DVD Only

Morgan (sci-fi, Kate Mara, Anya Taylor Joy) – Turns out that risk management is really very, very risky. DVD Only

Closet Monster (drama, Connor Jessup, Aaron Abrams) – A horror story about coming out and coming of age. DVD Only

Deepwater Horizon (drama, Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell) – Story of the people aboard the Deepwater Horizon when it exploded in the Gulf. DVD Only

Lost & Found (action, Benjamin Stockham, Jason Patric) – Teens look for treasure on mysterious island. DVD Only

The People Vs. Fritz Bauer (foreign thriller, Burghart Klaussner, Ronald Zehrfeld) – German language story of a post-war hunt for Adolf Eichmann. DVD Only

Tales of Halloween (horror, Keir Gilchrist, Booboo Stewart) – Horror anthology that would have been more suitable for October. Oh well. Instant Streaming Only

Mr. Pig (drama, Danny Glover, Maya Rudolph) – A pig farmer goes to Mexico to save his prize hog. It sounds terrible, but with these two actors, it could actually be sweet. Instant Streaming Only

(Dis) Honesty: The Truth About Lies (documentary) – From little lies to whoppers, this is a pretty timely documentary. Instant Streaming Only, Downloadable

News From the Planet Mars (foreign comedy, François Damiens, Vincent Macaigne) – French language story of a man who just wants to make people happy. Instant Streaming Only

One Day at a Time – Season 1 (TV comedy, Justin Machado, Rita Moreno) – Sort of a remake of the old Bonnie Franklin/Valerie Bertinelli/McKenzie Phillips show from the 70s.  This one has a son and daughter and a (questionably) helpful grandma.  Instant Streaming Only, Downloadable

Coin Heist (drama, Sasha Pieterse, Alex Saxon) – Teens want to steal rare coins to keep their school open.  Netflix Original.  Instant Streaming Only, Downloadable

The Librarians – Season 2 (TV sci-fi, Rebecca Romijn, Christian Kane) – Guardians of magical objects show.  I really should check this out, the commercials look good.  There is a third season.  This one isn’t a streamer so DVD Only

Sleepy Hollow – Season 3 (TV sci-fi, Tom Mison, Nicole Beharie) – Ichabod is back!  There is a fourth season coming as well.  This is not a streamer, so DVD Only

Bones – Season 11 (TV drama, Emily Deschanel, David Boreanaz) – This has been streaming for awhile, and is now Available on DVD

Girls – Season 5 (TV dramedy, Lena Dunham, Allison Williams) – The girls are back in town, still in their 20s and filled with angst.  There is a sixth season.  This one isn’t a streamer so DVD Only

The Secret Life of Pets (family animation, Louis C.K., Eric Stonestreet) – Despite a really impressive voice cast, it’s still animated, so I won’t be seeing it.  DVD Only

Jason Bourne (action, Matt Damon, Julia Stiles) – This, on the other hand, has both a talented and beautiful cast and I will be seeing it.  Heart you, Matt Damon.  DVD Only

Don’t Think Twice (comedy, Keegan-Michael Key, Gillian Jacobs) – A stand-up comedian comedy about an improv cast at odds when one member succeeds.  DVD Only

My King (foreign romance, Vincent Cassel, Emmanuelle Bercot) – Was her accident an accident?  French language.  DVD Only

City of Sin (drama, Malin Akerman, Kevin Connolly) – 1950s period piece about a detective in Los Angeles hiding from killers.  The description sounds good but it’s running under 2 stars – I’ll pass unless it streams.  DVD Only

Zombie Massacre 2: Reich of the Dead (horror, Andrew Harwood Mills, Dan van Husen) – This sounds awful and wonderful.  Who doesn’t love killing Nazi zombies?  DVD Only

Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life (family comedy, Griffin Gluck, Lauren Graham) – I know, dude.  I know.  DVD Only

Blair Witch (horror, James Allen McCune, Callie Hernandez) – Did this need a sequel?  I don’t really know.  Anyone who sees it, let me know if it’s any good.  DVD Only

Rurouni Kenshin 3: The Legend Ends (foreign action, Takeru Satô, Emi Takei) – Third installment of Japanese language samurai saga.  DVD Only

Operation Avalanche (thriller, Matt Johnson, Owen Williams) – Fake moon landing/Russian spy thriller.  DVD Only

David E. Talbert’s Another Man Will (comedy, Thomas Miles, Nadine Ellis) – Why do director’s make their names a part of the movie title?  I hate it.  Hate. It.  DVD Only

Run the Tide (drama, Johanna Braddy, Taylor Lautner) – Dysfunctional family drama with an unnecessarily long description on Netflix.  DVD Only

2 Lava 2 Lantula (creature feature,  Steve Guttenberg, Michael Winslow) – Apparently a sequel.  About giant spiders that shoot flames.  DVD Only

At the Fork (documentary) Examination of meat and dairy industries and their treatment of animals.  DVD Only

Natural Selection (drama, Mayson Dye, Katherine McNamara) – Bullied kid begins friendship with unusual girl.  Instant Streaming Available

Mississippi Murder (thriller, Luke Goss, Malcolm McDowell) – Do you suppose Malcolm McDowell gets to play a good guy in this murder mystery?  I doubt it, but he must want to sometimes.  DVD Only
